We are converting to a UNIX server for GCG. In VMS, I could do wonders with
DCL. One wonder was a command file that would read a record from a file, parse
the record to get the parameters to write another command file to submit to a
queue in order to download sections of GenBank or GenPept. The program waits
for completion and then loops to read another record. I am having trouble
achieving even the most rudimentary expertise in UNIX scripts. I will not say
anything bad about UNIX but attribute this to my ignorance, stupidity and age,
tho a lack of reasonable documentation seems to be a contributing factor. I do
learn by example, therefore, if you have some nice examples of scripts that do
things like that described above -- mainly reading records, parsing records,
writing other scripts, and synchronization, please be so kind as to mail them
to me. I am presently working an a Dec Alpha with OSF-1. GCG seems to favor
C-shells, which is fine with me.
If anyone wants my very nice VMS/DCL command files for downloading all of
genbank or genpept in sections. I will very happy to send same to you. I have
used GCG's Get_gbnew, tho I have extensively modified it to use another scratch
disk et c. to use as little disk space as possible during the process.
