New features in 8.0 include Prime, for selecting oligonucleotide
primers, Blast, a built-in blast client that can querry local or NCBI
databases, and Distances and GrowTree, for evolutionary analyses.
The biggest addition is the WPI, a GUI interface for remote X-terminals
that allows users to manage the GCG package by selecting sequences and
functions to operate on them with a mouse, from their Windows or Mac
workstations (running X-server software). This works well for the most
part, but is rather slow by comparison.
The biggest change of all with version 8.0 is that it won't run on your
SunOS. You will have to switch to Solaris 2.4. This is not a minor
consideration!
