local database need

Hi,
We have got around the need to keep 8 copies of the data updated by:
1. Each site has two versions of selected GCG programs. So, for example,
LOCALFASTA can be used to search user's own libraries or set of
sequences in his disk area defined in a file of sequence names.
2. FASTA etc have been redefined to run our own client-server versions
(called MoBiCS, Molecular Biology Client-server System) which
search against remote databases (EMBL etc). We have been asked to allow
searching against a set of sequences in the databases defined by a file
of sequence names, and are looking into this.

The only problem with this is if the search is to be against a set of
sequences, some of which are local and some are remote. A file of sequence
names with this mixture cannot be used with either local or remote FASTA.
In this case the user *must* FETCH the sequences into his disk space and
run LOCALFASTA.
However our system does work for our users where I estimate 90% or more want to
use their own sequence to search against the databases.
We have managed to provide user interfaces which look almost identical
to the standard GCG versions, so in most cases, I think the users dont
even know they are using remote databases!
