Running GCG on a PC

If I understood correctly, this implies that the PC runs a UNIX flavour. 
The answer might well be 'yes it runs' but this is slightly beside the point.
As long as people run Windows or OS/2 (some might even run DOS) the option
to run UNIX on the PC doesn't seem to me a very favourable suggestion for 
researchers. Am I missing the point here?
