I have tried testing for carbohydrates using the phenol-sulphuric acid
reaction both using phenol (Dubois et al.) or alpha-Naphtol (Molisch).
I have observed that several carbohydrates does not seem to give a positive
test. Does anybody know of a list of carbohydrates that will react and a list
of those that will not react in a Molisch/Dubois test?
Also, is there another test that *generally* will show the presence of
carbohydrates.
Thank you
