Department of Biochemistry / Computing Laboratory

The department of Biochemistry has a vacancy for a research assistant
to develop PC-hosted automated control and analysis software as part
of a project to develop fully automated sugar-sequencing systems. The
successful applicant will work in the Glycobiology Institute
(Director: Prof. Raymond Dwek) in collaboration with Dr Pauline Rudd,
and with Dr. Andrew Stevens of the Computing Laboratory. The aim of
the project is to develop software for the interactive and/or fully
automatic derivation of oligosaccharide structures from output logs of
automated gas chromatographs. The post thus offers the opportunity
for challenging software engineering work as part of state of the art
research and development in Biotechnology.
It is anticipated that applicants will have relevant software
engineering experience and/or appropriate qualifications in a
computing related discipline. Previous experience of programming to
commercial standards in an MS-Windows C++ environment will be a
significant advantage. Familiarity with the concepts of molecular
biology/biochemistry and/or Prolog programming will be helpful but are
not essential.
The post is tenable for 3 years with salary on the RS(1) scale
commensurate with experience and qualifications. Further technical
