VACANCIES BIJVOET CENTER FOR BIOMOLECULAR RESEARCH,
DEPARTMENT OF BIO-ORGANIC CHEMISTRY, UTRECHT UNIVERSITY, THE NETHERLANDS

The research program of the carbohydrate section of the Department of
Bio-Organic Chemistry, Bijvoet Center for Biomolecular Research at Utrecht
University, the Netherlands (Prof. Dr J.F.G. Vliegenthart and Prof. Dr J.P.
Kamerling), is focused on primary / three-dimensional structure analysis of
glycoprotein glycans and polysaccharides, biosynthesis of oligosaccharide
sequences, and organic synthesis of oligosaccharides.

The Board of the Department likes to announce the following vacancies,
which are immediately available:

1. A PhD position (4 years) for a topic on the structural analysis of
exopolysaccharides from lactic acid bacteria. This program is part of a
Dutch network program including structural analysis, biochemistry,
molecular biology and physical chemistry of new generations of thickeners
of microbial origin, and is supported by the national dairy and food
industry. The practical work of the applicant, as carried out in the
Bijvoet Center, will comprise chemical degradation and derivatization
procedures, chromatographic methods, mass spectrometry and NMR
spectroscopy. At the end of the term a thesis leading to a doctorate at
Utrecht University has to be prepared. Only nationals of a European country
(including the Netherlands) are invited to reflect.

2. A PhD position (4 years) for a topic on the structural analysis of
biologically relevant O-glycopeptides. This program is part of a European
network program, entitled "engineering protein O-glycosylation for the
production of receptor blockers", and includes molecular biological,
biochemical, glycotechnological and structural aspects. The practical work
of the applicant, as carried out in the Bijvoet Center, will comprise the
MS and NMR analysis of the various generated wild-type and engineered
products. Also conformational studies of key-products will be included. At
the end of the term a thesis leading to a doctorate at Utrecht University
has to be prepared. Because of EU restrictions, only nationals of a
European country (including the Netherlands) are invited to reflect.

3. A PhD position (4 years) for a topic on the threedimensional structure
determination of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), in order to study the
influence of the carbohydrate chains on the protein conformation and vice
versa. For this project, started in 1991 with the analysis of the alpha
subunit and specifically deglycosylated forms of the alpha-subunit,
experience with advanced NMR techniques is a prerequisite. At the end of
the term a thesis leading to a doctorate at Utrecht University has to be
prepared. Only nationals of a European country (including the Netherlands)
are invited to reflect.

4. A post-doctoral position (1 year) for a topic on the synthesis of
biologically relevant oligosaccharides. This position is supported by a EU
grant, and only nationals of a EU member state, with the exception of the
Netherlands, are invited to reflect.

If you are interested and have the right academic qualification for
starting a PhD or post-doctoral position in the Netherlands, please send
