evolution of glycosylation

Glycosylation do occur in some prokaryote, e.g., species of archaebacteria and 
eubacteria.  However, the types of structures in these species are not found in
other organisms.  N-linked oligosaccharides are only found (so far) in eukary-
otes with variations in trimming and modification of the sugar chains.
