"One of the biggest advantages to making such genetic changes is that
insects breed so quickly"
(Sunday Times January 3rd 1999).
Changes in genetic make up can not take effect in the lifetime of
a human. It has to be done in the next generations, hence the quotes
given like the one above. It is not ethical to genetically modify humans
in such a way. Even if it was allowed, our own life span makes it
an almost impossible experiment of no value to anyone.
Genetic "medicines" WILL NOT produce cures, only therapies.
Anyone who promises different is not telling you the truth. This
isn't medicine grown out of compassion, it's coming from the
need to line individual's pockets.
Medicine has so far to go in surgical advances, technology,
diagnostic procedures, effective pain relief, psychology, basic
caring skills, primary health care, improving social health and
many other therapies. What on earth are we doing racing down
this route with so little understanding?
If you want to pass on good and healthy genes, look after children
today. Give them good leisure activities and welcoming communities
where they have a value. Let them be happy, have a belief and
develop strong immune systems. Let them learn to respect all
people for ' all ' their differences ( even the genetic ones)
