The Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology (IGP) at Uppsala University (igp.uu.se) has a broad research profile with strong research groups focused on genomics, cancer and molecular diagnostics. One goal of IGP is to promote a close collaboration between clinical and pre-clinical researchers. Research is presently conducted in the areas of medical and clinical genetics, clinical immunology, bioinformatics, pathology, tumor biology and vascular biology. The department is also integrated with the units of clinical genetics, clinical immunology and clinical pathology-cytology at Akademiska Hospital, Uppsala. IGP is involved in many educations at the Medicine and pharmacy domain but is also involved in teaching at the Science and technology domain. IGP provides a well-developed infrastructure for studying molecular medicine. The yearly turnover is around 400 million SEK and there are approximately 680 employees or affiliated personnel, of which more than 100 are PhD-students.
A PhD student position is open in Senior lecturer Lene Uhrbom’s research group at IGP, Uppsala University. We are looking for a highly motivated person with a deep interest in studying brain tumor development with the goal to uncover basic mechanisms, signaling pathways and target proteins to which new efficient and specific therapies can be developed. The project is focused on studies of patient-derived cell cultures and in vivo models of brain tumor development, and comprises a wide variety of techniques and analyses (in vivo, tissue, cell and molecular biology methods and bioinformatics analyses). The PhD student position covers full-time graduate studies during maximum 4 years, but additional assignments at IGP such as teaching and administrative work can be included with a maximum of 20% of the employment. The position will in such case be extended with the corresponding amount of time to allow four years of full-time graduate studies.
You must have a completed MSc degree in a relevant area (e.g. biomedicine or molecular biotechnology) and a certificate in Laboratory Animal Science (both theory and practice). You need to be highly motivated, focused, structured and able to work independently as well as in teams. You need to have excellent skills in oral and written English. Documented practical experience from experimental cancer research (in vivo, tissue, cell, molecular and bioinformatics methods) and knowledge of cancer biology (in particular brain tumors) are considered meritorious. Personal characteristics such as collaboration skills, drive, creativity, problem-solving skills, scientific conceptual maturity and ability to work under time-pressure will also be considered in the collective evaluation of the applicant.
Employment as PhD student requires that the applicant is accepted or will be accepted to the postgraduate program where the ability to assimilate such education is a crucial factor.
