                 SECOND CALL FOR PAPERS

The Seventh International Conference on the

	 An International Conference organized by
The International Society for Adaptive Behavior (ISAB)

    	    4-9 (-11) August 2002, Edinburgh, UK

The objective of this interdisciplinary conference is to bring
together researchers in computer science, alife, control, artificial
intelligence, robotics, neurosciences, ethology, and related fields so
as to further our understanding of the behaviors and underlying
mechanisms that allow natural and artificial animals to adapt and
survive in uncertain environments. The conference will focus on
experiments with well-defined models --- robot models, computer
simulation models, mathematical models --- designed to help
characterize and compare various organizational principles or
architectures underlying adaptive behavior in real animals and in
synthetic agents, the animats. In addition there will be sessions on
psychological issues and on the industrial applications of animat

Contributions treating any of the following topics from the
perspective of adaptive behavior will receive special emphasis:

     The Animat approach
     Philosophical and psychological issues
     Characterization of agents and environments
     Passive and active perception
     Motor control
     Visually-guided behaviors
     Action selection
     Behavioral sequencing
     Navigation and mapping
     Internal models and representation
     Learning and development
     Motivation and emotion
     Emergent structures and behaviors
     Collective and social behavior
     Neural correlates of behavior
     Evolutionary and co-evolutionary approaches
     Autonomous robotics
     Software agents and virtual creatures
     Applied adaptive behavior
     Animats in education

Authors should make every effort to suggest implications of their work
for both natural and artificial animals, and to distinguish the
portions of their work which use simulation from those using a
physical agent.

Papers that do not deal explicitly with adaptive behavior will be rejected.

		   Submission Instructions

Submitted papers must not exceed 10 pages in 10pt, two-column
format. Because the whole review process heavily relies on electronic
means, the organizers insist on electronic submissions of PDF
(preferred) or Postscript documents wherever possible. Submit your
paper following the submission instructions on the conference Web

Computer, video, and robotic demonstrations are also invited for
submission. Submit a 2-page proposal plus a title page to the program
chair. Indicate equipment requirements and relevance to the themes of
the conference.

		   Edinburgh Festivals

SAB'02 is concurrent with the first week of the Edinburgh Festival
Fringe and will finish just as the Edinburgh International Festival
starts. This is an ideal opportunity to sample some of the shows, but
also means that accommodation will be booked up early. BEWARE!!!
Also note that all 9000 seats for the nightly Edinburgh Military
Tattoo are normally filled at least three months in advance.

gives access to more detail on these three festivals and others.

Because of the accommodation problem we have pre-booked a number of
standard rooms (see web site). If you want one please tell us, they
will be allocated on a first-come first-served basis. If you'd prefer
something else book VERY early.
