syndrome X and metabolic disregulation

Syndrome X is a set of diseases manifesting in populations exposed to
civilization. Depending on genetic vulnerability when exposed to civilization
individuals in a native population can develop none, one, or any of the
following cluster of diseases: obesity, type II diabetes, atherosclerosis,
hypertension etc.
The common denominator in syndrome X is an ad-lib diet with all the
fat, salt, and calories people wish to consume. The studies on diet and aging
seem to suggest some relationship between increased calories, decreased insulin
sensitivity and increased free radical production with mitochondrial breakdown.
Does anyone know of a good article, or database regarding these things?
Thanks in advance John Ewing MD :)
