Transmitting Science is offering a n= ew course on population
modeling: INTEGRAL PROJECTION MODELS: DEMOGRAPHY IN= A CONTINUOUS
WORLD, October 17-21, 2016.
PLACE: Facilitie= s of the Centre de Restauració i Interpretació
Paleontologica, El= s Hostalets de Pierola, Barcelona (Spain).
Registration= and more
Instructors: Dr. Rob Salguero-Gómez (Ma= x Planck Institute for
Demographic Research, Germany and University of Quee= nsland,
Australia) and Maria Paniw (University of Cadiz, Spain).
Course descri= ption:
Population modeling provides insights on ecological and evolut= ionary
processes as diverse as the probability of a local extinction, the e=
volution of cellular maintenance, or the influence of clonality on
With advances in computing power and theoretical developments, po=
pulation models have evolved rapidly and new approaches such as
Integral Pr= ojection Models (IPMs) have emerged.
This course will teach basic and= advanced applications of IPMs. By
the end of the workshop, attendees will = be able to construct IPMs
with their own data (or data provided by the inst= ructors), and
estimate a number of important population rates including sen=
sitivity analyses, life table response experiments, stochastic
projections = and times to local extinction.
The course is targeted to MSc, PhD stu= dents and postdocs (although
faculty are welcome to apply to) with a strong= interest in
demography, with an already existing foundation of population = matrix
models, and an intermediate level of R.
Participants with well= developed scientific questions and collected
data will be given priority, = but the instructors will provide with
example data to those with no data.
This course is organized by Transmitting Science, the Institut
Catal&#= 224; de Paleontologia and the Centre de Restauració i
Interpretac= ió Paleontologica.
Please feel free to distribute this informati= on between your
colleagues if you consider it appropriate.
