Hi,
the usual reason for malloc errors is that the process runs out of memory, this is a very commmon occurence on Alpha's. The easiest way to solve it is to add something like unlimit (or ulimit) to the srscheck and srsdo scripts in the $SRSETC directory (that's how I fixed it), you may also need to do that in the wgetz script.
As for the other, I've never tried to do that so don't know whether it will work. is supposed to work ... it might be worth emailing Lion asking the question ... it might be a bug after all.
