At the University of Manchester, UK, we have over 10 years experience in
teaching a range of online Masters courses in computational biology. Two
of the courses beginning in March are likely to be of particular
interest to subscribers to this forum. The courses are :
Mathematics for metabolic modelling
Introduction to microarray data analysis
'Mathematics for metabolic modelling' will provide an introduction to
the mathematical skills and concepts needed for modelling biological
systems. Students will be using R, an increasingly important language
for data analysis for the life sciences.
The key course themes are :
Descriptive Statistics and Graphics with R
Introduction to Probability
Kinetics and Ordinary Differential Equations
Statistical Inference
Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) Bayesian Inference
A Biochemical Network Model
'Introduction to microarray data analysis' is divided into five main
sections:
Microarrays and experimental design
Data capture and preliminary checks
Data analysis
2-channel data
Gene Class Tests
Course participants will work through practical examples using maxdview,
a visualisation environment for microarray data from The University of
Manchester, and/or R/Bioconductor.
