Thanks for wrapping this up; personally, I would have raised much the
same points as John did (especially the support thing irked me - install
support has been part of every boxed set Linux distribution for the past
years). But I rather just use Linux than talk about it.
My experience: for bioinformatics on a tight budget, with some own
software development on the side, Unix == Linux. It helps if you happen
to know a Linux guru (or be one) though.
