Functional equivalent of GCG Findpatterns?

Henry Spencer's second library has POSIX regular expressions and lots
of extras but we just use the 'old' library for everything at present.

PCRE looks interesting, and does have suitable licensing for EMBOSS.

Anybody else tried it?
