If you have Ghostscript and ppmtogif, you can do:
gs -dNOPAUSE -dBATCH -sDEVICE=ppm -sOutputFile=image.ppm image.ps
(you can change the resolution etc with other switches)
Then:
ppmtogif image.ppm > image.gif
