I have also found that the best way to use optical scanners that are widely
available is to use the handheld kind, but put the autorad on a light box,
and scan on top.  This seems to enhance the contrast of the original image,
and changes the slope of the standards such that if your "unknown" band is
in the linear range, the result is much more accurate.
