Field data database

Does anyone have any recommendations for software for handling
diverse field data in a centralised repository way. So different
sub-projects can register definitive versions of their raw results,
which could be anything from once a year soil-C measurements to
3 hourly soil temp. measurements recorded by datalogger. Also
sparse matrix data like species observed in a plot, where there are
dozens of theoretical zeroes.

I know you can develope systems using various packages, but I'm
interested in any extant systems people have tried, even something
you've only half developed would be interesting as it may save me time
if I do end up developing something myself.

Many thanks, Terry Brown
