Thanks for the advice. Dr. Ernst Molitor at University of Bonn has
kindly directed me to his modified GDE 2.2 which works (almost)
perfectly on my system. I still get a few xview errors.
I think my previous copy ( v 2.1 ) was broken or corrupted.
