ANNOUNCEMENT

MACBOXSHADE
A Macintosh port of BOXSHADE

- Purpose -

BOXSHADE is a program for creating good-looking printouts from multiple
aligned protein or DNA sequences. The program does no alignment by
itself, it
has to take as input a file preprocessed by a multiple alignment program
or a
multiple file editor. Output can be PostScript, EPSF, PICT, RTF or ASCII
text.
In the standard BOXSHADE output, identical and similar residues in the
multiple-alignment are represented by different colors or shadings.
There
are many options concerning the kind of shading to be applied, sequence
numbering, consensus output and so on. One of the main changes made
during
construction of the Macintosh version was to provide access to these
options
through dialogs. BOXSHADE reads in a sequence, processes it, then quits.
MACBOXSHADE
holds the sequence in memory until a new sequence is read in, or the
user
quits. Any number of different outputs can be done with the same
sequence;
ASCII and PICT outputs can be viewed dynamically before a version is
stored as
a file.

- Availability -

The program, which comes with complete (as I can make it) documentation,
is
available for download from the BOXSHADE FTP archive:

ftp://ulrec3.unil.ch/pub/boxshade/macboxshade

Any queries/bug reports should be addressed to me, not Kay Hofmann, who
only
looks after the mainframe version of BOXSHADE.
