In my biology course, we used NIH/Image. It's a Mac program, and
we used it to calculate the area of sea urchin embryos if I remember
well. I think it's shareware or freeware, but if you want more
info, email my teacher Peter Woodruff at
woodruf at champlaincollege.qc.ca, he'll be able to tell you where
he got this program.
