**** PairWise and SearchWise 1.5.20 release ****
         *** ***

This is the final beta release for PairWise and SearchWise.
The release is now very stable and has been used with consistent
results for a while.

There is extensive WWW information and help at

        http://www.ocms.ox.ac.uk/~birney/wise/topwise.html

including a small WWW server for the programs at

        http://www.ocms.ox.ac.uk/~birney/wise/hwise.html

PairWise was recently used in a technical report from Peer Bork
in this week's Science (271 p 1431) where he illustrated that a recently
reported sperm specific receptor was very closely related to a proto
oncogene - by a succession of frameshifts. Although it is unclear whether
these frameshifts are due to human error or real (see the response by
D.J. Burks et al following) early use of Wisetools programs, in particular
a SearchWise search of protein databases using the DNA sequence would have
immeadaitely drawn a researcher's attention to the frameshifts.

Wisetools is now being used by an expanding group of people. If you
would like to get on a mailing list informing you of latest developments,
or would like to try your hand at being an alpha tester, please email me
at

        birney at molbiol.ox.ac.uk

I hope you enjoy the package :)

        ewan birney.
