Current version of MacX is supposedly 1.5, although I haven't seen it myself.
Version 1.2 works acceptably well in my experience.

Alternatives are:-

MachTen. A full blown UNIX for the Mac. Commercial and about 360 UK pounds (68K)
         or 500 pounds (PowerMac)

eXodus. From White Pine Software.

I have used eXodus and it works well, but I just preferred MacX for some
reason that I can't put my finger on. It just _feels_ nicer.
