A good general purpose scanner for visible patterns is the Hewlett Packard
ScanJet IIIP with 256 grey levels and 300dpi. You could also consider the
HP ScanJet 3c but it's colour and 600dpi resolution are not necessary for
gel work.
You could consider GelManager or GelCompar software for the PC or Dendron
for the Mac.
