There's nothing to stop you loading a file with a different extension;
.rm is just the default that Mats chose when he wrote the filter.
Although I am the author of Refs itself, I have never used the
Reference Manager filter, and if you continue to have problems with it
you are best off contacting Mats directly. His e-mail address is
given in the help file, and also in the options dialog for the
Reference Manager filter.
