There was an article in Sky&Telescope (this is an astronomy journal)
maybe in 1988-1989, describing how to analyse the periodicity of binary
stars. In the computing section. There was an accompanying program in
basic for doing discrete Fouriertransform on experimental data. That
might give you some hints.
