I know that this is not the correct place to post this but I do not
know where is.
The problem concerns printing to a file from Microsoft Word 6 for
Windows. I am running Windows for Workgroups 3.11 and MS-DOS 6.22.
The problem never arose when running Word for Windows 2.0, Windows
3.11 and DOS 6.2.
When I print to a file, I am prompted to provide a file name and have
been using the name plasprac.prn as the document is called plasprac.doc
(It's a plasmid practical for 1st year medical students).
A print file is created but it is 0 bytes in size. If instead I call
the print file plas.prn, a 0 byte file called plas.prn is created but
in addition, a file called pla. is also created. This contains what
ought to have been sent to plas.prn and from some experimenting a
pattern is emerging.
If I restrict the filename before the dot to four characters or less
then things are fine (sort of). An empty .prn file is produced and the
output is instead sent to a file whose name is the first three characters
of the intended filename. A filename longer than four characters always
fails.
Is this a bug in Word 6 about which anybody has previous experience or
is it a feature that Microsoft have not yet fully revealed?
I'd be grateful for any help. Any hints to a Microsoft Word forum would
be most helpful.
