GopherPup, a cross-platform gopher+ client, steps out

GopherPup is an Internet information client program, usable
on the common computer systems including Macintosh, Motif/X-
Windows and MS-Windows[+]. It provides an easy to use,
Macintosh Finder-like link to the range of Internet Gopher
services.

This program supports Gopher+ methods, including ASK forms
that make it possible to provide client-server dialogs for
various information analyses, and supports multiple view
formats, so that you can fetch versions of documents that
most suit your computer system.

GopherPup is available at
ftp.bio.indiana.edu:/util/gopher/gopherpup.

GopherPup is based directly on my earlier GopherApp program
for Macintosh computers. It includes, or will include, the
same feature set and general user interface.

It is built on top of a cross-platform toolkit, written in
ANSI C, from the National Center for Biotechnology
Information (NCBI), especially Jonathan Kans' Vibrant user-
interface toolkit, which works on Macintosh, MS-Windows and
X/Motif (Unix and VMS) systems.

On the NCBI toolkit I built a C++ application framework that
is patterned after the MacApp framework from Apple Computer.
This application framework, called Don's Class Application
Library (DCLAP), will be available freely to the public, as
is NCBI's toolkit, for those wishing to use it for
development of platform independent applications. The home
archive location for DCLAP is {ftp, gopher} to
ftp.bio.indiana.edu:/util/dclap.

This initial release of GopherPup lacks several important
features, and also it includes many bugs, making it likely
to crash, and not yet suitable for extensive use.

-- Macintosh requirements: requires MacTCP from Apple
Computer. The current release may not work at all on older
macs (SE).

-- MS-Windows requirements: not available yet.

-- X/Motif requirements: the author will only be able to
supply binaries for a limited number of Unix OS flavors.
These are
SunOS-Sparc-Motif, now available, your system will need
to supply Motif runtime shared libraries, and
    SGI-Irix-MIPS-Motif, not yet ready.

Source code will eventually be available to those who wish
to compile on their own systems.

Comments, bug reports and suggestions for new features may
be addressed via e-mail to GopherPup at Bio.Indiana.Edu

[+] 25 jan 94: still pending development for MSWindows. If
anyone has an MS Windows computer to loan for this, please
let me know.
