I stumbled across what appears to be a pretty large collection of High Quality
JPEG's of plant photographs at the following gopher site. I don't know if the
images are available via anonymous ftp login (I tried but couldn't find the
~/images directory). You can save them to your local machine using most
gopher programs.
The site is accessed through "Other-Bio-Gophers", which is served by
'ftp.bio.indiana.edu', and is called "Biodiversity and Biological Collections
at Harvard" (huh.harvard.edu). At that site, look for menu item "Biological
Images", then note there is a file called "Full Image Catalog (ASCII)", which
describes the JPEG files that are found in the "Image Files" subdir. Hope
this helps.
