Just to support Reinhard: it is obvious that the network costs will increase
in the near future (it's already the case here in Germany). While in the past
all the links have been paid by governments (like satellite links, gateways,
ip-service providers, ...) the public funding is reduced signifantly so that
the network services become more and more commercial. At the end you will
have to pay for the bytes you transmit, the longer the distance, the more
you will pay. At the moment my institute pays a volume independent fee for
the line to the next gateway. So this posting goes from here to this gatway,
crosses the atlantic, is distributed all over the US and further on. But who
pays? I expect that things will change very soon. And then it's really worth
to buy the CD. In prinicple you should keep data locally that you make use
of very often. For all other sort of information it's cheaper to pay the link
than to pay the ressources to store the stuff on your own. On the other hand
this will increase bandwith dramatically.
Just my 0.02 Pfennig
