RE: WORD 6.0 for Macintosh
Is anybody else dissatisfied with Microsoft WORD 6.0 for the Macintosh? It
has many wonderful advanced features. However, Microsoft has lost features
that had been available previously in WORD 5.1 for the Macintosh. Those
features, listed below, met my needs for using the software. The current
version does not.
Spelling:
You can't bring the spelling dialog box behind the window containing the
document being spelled. This is annoying when you want to review some text
and then return to/resume spelling. [This feature has been lost since 5.1.]
When I create new custom dictionaries, and add them to the options, the
spelling dialog box remembers only one of them after quitting and starting
a new session. [This feature has been lost since 5.1.]
The identities of the custom dictionaries in the spelling options dialog
box does not reveal the unique identities of the dictionaries listed. It
only displays the first part of the path on which they are located. Also,
you cannot scroll from right to left to identify the ones you want and
select them. (Add lets you select if you remember where you put them. No
big deal, but an extra and unnecessary step.)
Find:
You can't bring the find dialog box behind the window containing the
document being searched. This is annoying when you want to continue the
search while viewing the text. [This feature has been lost since 5.1.]
Replace:
You can't bring the replace dialog box behind the window containing the
document being edited. This is annoying when you want to continue to edit
while viewing the text. [This feature has been lost since 5.1.]
Compatibility with Quick Link II Fax software. WORD 5.1 was compatible with
this widely used, upscale software package for fax-modem. Specifically,
now:
After selecting Quick Link II Fax in Chooser, WORD 6.0 will not allow me
to reset the page setup. Selecting page setup causes the menu item to blink
and no dialog box opens for page setup. [This feature has been lost since
5.1.]
In WORD 5.1, I could execute the Print command from the File menu after
doing a page setup for Quick Link II Fax. This caused the Quick Link II Fax
to present me a dialog box to enter the telephone number and send the
document. In WORD 6.0, selecting the Print command under this condition
only flashes a message that something is being printed. It does not open
Quick Link II Fax. Nothing is sent. [This feature has been lost since 5.1.]
The foregoing leaves me with a workaround that requires the saving of WORD
documents as text with no formatting (also no page breaks) before faxing.
This is inferior to 5.1.
Viewing Footnotes
Clicking the mouse on the split window bar while holding down the shift
key used to reveal foot- or endnotes. Now, in a document with foot- or
endnotes, I get a message saying that there are no notes. Yet when I look
under the View menu I see Footnotes (not dimmed out) available as an
option. When I select View-Footnotes, I can then view the footnotes that
the message said aren't there. [This feature has been lost since 5.1.]
