A new version of the fasta package (1.7a1) that corrects a
problem with the ssearch alignment routine and some documentation
errors is now available for anonymous ftp from virginia.edu in
pub/fasta.
The ssearch program, which implements the rigorous
Smith-Waterman algorithm, has also been speeded up about 50 - 100%,
depending on the machine. Searches of Swiss-Prot with a 200 residue
query sequence now take about 1/2 hour on an IBM RS/6000 (370) unix
workstation (and about 10 min on a DEC Alpha 300).
