INFORMEDICA: A New Journal on Medical Informatics

The Center for Biomedical Informatics of the State University of Campinas, Bra-
zil, has launched its new official publication, INFORMEDICA, a magazine devot-
ed to disseminate Informatics to physicians and other end users of the health
care community in Brazil. The magazine, with a certified circulation of 22,000
is distributed free of charge to 7,000 cardiologists, 12,000 general
practitioners and 3,000 other specialists. Other medical specialists, such as
neurologists, surgeons, etc., will receive the magazine on an annual rotation
basis. All members of the Brazilian Society for Health Informatics receive
INFORMEDICA and subscriptions are accepted, too.

The bimonthly magazine features tutorials, applications, program listings,
current news about Medical Informatics, recent products and publications,
forthcoming events, etc. A section devoted to novices in medical computing
is planned for the next issues, featuring a hands-on course on microcomputers.
For example, the first issue had a review article on computer support to
medical diagnosis and a program for assessing renal function in critical
patients. The second issue featured an article about the future of hospital
automation and a program for diagnosing heart infarctions. The third issue
(July/August 1993) inaugurated a new section (New Technologies), with an
article about Virtual Reality and Medicine. Articles on telemedicine,
computer applications to medical education, hypermidia and Medicine, etc.,
are planned for the next issues.

Authors from any country are invited to contribute papers to the magazine
in English, French, German, Spanish or Portuguese. The text will be
translated to Portuguese, if necessary, and edited to conform to the
magazine's standards. Texts of exceptional quality will be paid on a
per-page basis. Please send a letter of intention containing an outline
of the intended paper before submitting it. An author kit is available.

A limited number of magazines is available for distribution to interested
persons (N.B: it is entirely written in Portuguese). Please drop an e-mail
note to the editor.

The publication's editor-in-chief is Renato M.E. Sabbatini, PhD, and associate
editors are Paulo Marcondes Carvalho-Junior, MD and Jaime Oliveira Ilha, MD,
