Try "Unix for Dummies" -- my spouse likes it very much for the unitiated. I
found the earlier "DOS for Dummies" VERY friendly and informative -- I
am a convinced Mac hacker. Sorry I don't have the full citation, but it's
a standard publisher and should be in Books in Print.
