You really only have 3 choices for VAX's (if you mean an IBM
mainframe then you are out of luck). For VAX's, GCG, STADEN and IG.
GCG is most widely used, very well supported, and approx. $5000 for
both programs and databases updated quarterly.
Staden is the best for shotgun sequence assembly, has some excellent
but little used analysis programs, and approx. $200.
IG is used by many but at last recollection was more expensive
than GCG.
These are the three main program packages and all are available
in UNIX versions as well. We have GCG and Staden on our VAX and Staden
on our Sun's.
