Feeding news by mail

I've been using "cnews" and the "tin" threaded newsreader to read the
BIOSCI mailing lists locally as news for some time now because we do
not have a news feed at our site and have little prospect of ever
getting one ;-(

Everything works correctly except posting or followups which
(obviously) can't work without a newsfeed.  I post to bionet.plants by
using the tin 'r'eply to author command and edit the address by hand.

I recently saw some discussion about this problem elsewhere on Usenet
and other people use the 'moderated' status of newsgroups in the news
active file to re-direct articles to a mailing list by putting the list
address (cf. the moderator's address) in the mailpaths file.

I tried it, and it works perfectly!

Dave wants people to use news rather than mail but this method provides
a compromise for people who, like me, cannot easily obtain a news feed.
It also permits me to read other mailing lists as if they were news
groups which makes slogging through bulging mailboxes little more than
a painful memory ...
