I believe the next version of Excel, due to be released in January,
is supposed to have error bar capability built in.
Also, there are pre-written public domain macros for error bars
and other functions for the current version of Excel.
Check the ftp.cica.indiana.edu archive (or its mirrors).
I think there is even a separate /excel directory.
