I've searched the internet on several occasions looking for programs and
information (test questions, articles) for my introductory genetics class.
What little public domain software/info primarily comes from our rich cousins,
the medical schools. I've found the following gopher sites with items:
1. gopher to ftp.bio.indiana.edu (IUbio software+data/biology menu):
Information on some commercial Mac software (MacFly, Hypherfly, Hyperlink).
2. gopher to dean.med.uth.tmc.edu (Biomedical_shareware menu):
Has GENET.EXE (medical) GENETICS PRACTICE EXAM(S). I've used a couple of
these questions in my exams (DOS program). (Geez, it shure would be nice
to have a central database of introductory genetics questions on the internet).
3. gopher to merlot.welch.jhu.edu (ftpsites/medical education software menu):
A couple of quiz makers, and some good examples of medical education software.
There is also the book, "Mendelian inheritance in Man", on-line, somewhere
on this gopher, which has lots of current info.
4. Project BioQUEST, Biology Dept., Beloit College, Beloit, WI 53511 has
written several programs, including "Genetics Construction Kit", and
"Microbial Genetics Construction Kit" (don't know anything more).
5. Alan Day (Univ. of Western Ontario) has developed a "visual genetics"
software program for teaching genetics. Can probably be contacted at:
aday at julian.uwo.ca.
Also, there is much public domain software for molecular biology that
could be adapted for molecular genetics/evolution labs. The IUbio server
is a good place to start.
