This is more complex than you might realize (there's a decent discussion
in the CRC book, _Mathematical Methods for DNA sequences_, 1989, ed: Mike
Waterman, ISBN 0-8493-6664-X), but there are a couple of programs that try
to assist this process:

1) COMAP by Kay Hofmann for the IBM PC, can be got at the Indiana FTP site

2) GelReader, now in it's 2.0.3 incarnation available from the NCSA
archives at zaphod.ncsa.uiuc.edu in /pub/mac/GelReader (I think).

Good Luck,

Harry
