Just to be sure that the story is complete (GenBank actually was not
distributing analysis software at the time and Dan had been on the
scene with e-mail service for quite a while):
We spent part of the last year at BIONET (in 1989) revising the
documentation and working with several of the authors to fix/improve
the programs. The person who is a real unsung hero in this initial
effort is Spencer Yeh, a former BIONET technical consultant, who did
all of the work on getting the programs into shape. When it was clear
that the resource was not going to be renewed, we didn't want these
programs to be lost, so we encouraged Dan Davison to take them over on
his server after we finished upgrading them. Don Gilbert also set up
an excellent FTP service at this time. Rob Harper was instrumental in
getting the code to Europe and in working out the many problems with
sending software by e-mail over the various networks together with
Rainer and Peter at EMBL. This was a great example of an
international collaboration made possible by the networks.
