The Wide Area Information Server is an electronic publishing system,
developed by Thinking Machine Corporation that is freely available on
many computer platforms. Fundamentally a remote information retrieval
system, WAIS offers user-friendly multimedia access to distant
resources using networks such as the internet, X.25, and modems.
This two-day conference launches the North Carolina WAIS Initiative by
gathering peopel who have worked on the WAIS program and people who
would like to understand how WAIS can offer an electronic publishing
backbone for network information distribution.
* The conference will include demonstrations of all public interfaces
and services available on WAIS.
* Speakers will include people who have created the tools, and topics
will focus on where their efforts are going. Both industry and academic
projects will be presented.
* Users of the technology will discuss how it already has affected
their organizations and what their plans are for future development.
