Sequence reading software for UNIX?

UNIX Workstation users:

Has anyone implemented a method of reading back DNA sequences on
a UNIX workstation (e.g. SPARC) for sequence checking purposes? I
imagine it would be fairly easy using a script and controlling the
writing of specific audio files to /dev/audio, but before I try it
I would like to know if anyone else has already done this. Thanks!

On a more difficult topic, does anyone know anything about VOICE
recognition as a method of sequence data input?

Thanks,

Tim
