While the FASTA programs are readily available, they are not
in the public domain. Placing something in the public domain has explicit
legal consequences, in particular the author loses all control over
distribution and use. People are welcome to copy the FASTA package
over the internet or buy DOS and Mac versions (with complete source
code), but the programs may not be redistributed without permission.
