TITLE: Director of Sequencing Operations
CLASSIFICATION: Exempt; Research Staff
REPORTS TO: Director, Genome Sequencing Program
OVERALL RESPONSIBILITY
Will be responsible for managing sequencing operations to ensure that
scientific goals are met within deadlines and budgets. Manage the progress
and quality of the data produced by all of the sequencing production groups
(DNA Prep, Library Construction, Shotgun Sequencing, Sequence Detection,
Materials and Quality Control) and create and maintain tracking metrics and
ensure that daily throughput goals are met.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES
=B7 Motivate, lead, and coordinate sequencing laboratory team leader=
s.
Integrate the work plans of multiple teams working in a complex and
fast-paced environment. Bring multiple teams together to trouble-shoot and
solve problems rapidly.
=B7 Manage sequencing process to maintain expected throughput for al=
l
teams to meet daily, weekly and monthly goals.
=B7 Develop, refine, and monitor quality metrics for work as it move=
s
through sequencing process, and use these metrics to optimize quality.
Ensure numbers of plates combined with quality scores meet objectives.
=B7 Manage capacity utilization and quality metrics as projects are =
run
on detection devices. Ensure that machine issues are resolved and all
machines are utilized to full capacity on a daily basis based on capacity
utilization rules.
=B7 Utilize existing cost accounting tools, and develop new ones.
Manage facility to increase cost-efficiency.
=B7 Determine equipment needs and direct purchases.
=B7 Approve hiring of personnel and purchasing of supplies and
reagents.
=B7 Work closely with Senior Staff members and technology developmen=
t
team to manage and institute technology transfer, process optimization and
quality improvement.
=B7 Direct program progress updates at Genome Center Staff meetings.
=B7 Direct all efforts to run the facility as a production and cost
leader.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education
=B7 Ph.D. or MBA preferred.
Experience
=B7 Dynamic leader of people with excellent oral, written and
interpersonal skills.
=B7 Minimum of 5 years directly related industry experience managing
large, cross-functional projects.
=B7 Proven ability to manage large multi-million dollar budgets.
=B7 Excellent process and program management skills.
=B7 Demonstrated ability to identify, analyze and resolve issues in
collaboration with all levels of staff.
=B7 Must enjoy working in a fast paced, cutting-edge and challenging
environment.
=B7 Knowledge of basic molecular biology and scientific processes
