377 communication problem

Wild guesses due to not having such a machine - broken or dry joint
connection in the serial cable. Easily tested with a meter. Or duff
serial port on the Mac. Again it must be possible to check this with
anything else that could talk to the same port e.g. a modem comes to
mind.
