spikes in ABI 310 electrophoresis chart

I often get sharp spikes in my ABI 310 electrophoresis chart which upsets 
the baseline and can take some time to get back to normal. Any idea what 
could be causing this? The only thing we have thought of are power surges 
from the mains line. It happens often, so it may be some other machinery we 
have running at the same time.
