Dear Alan

I had the same problem a couple of weeks ago. It was due to a build up of
dried acrylamide on the plates.  It's important to wash the plates just 
a run is completed to avoid this.  I switched to new plates and the 
disappeared.  I soaked the old plates and spacers in NaOH overnight and 
with HCL to removed the junk.
