Try a periodic wash of the plates with 0.1M NaOH, followed by 0.1MHCl (10
mins
each). This removes any crud on/in the surface , and restores the acidic
surface
of the plate. ABI recommend every 10 gels, but maybe sooner if you see
the
problem more often. Also, avoid prolonged exposure to tapwater.
